Music therapy is based on the principle that everything in the universe was created from vibration. And because our bodies are made of water, and water conducts sound, the body is an amazing resonator of sound. Sound resonates four times faster in water. These vibrational sounds travel through the body to help remove energy blockages, relieving stagnation, pain and increasing the flow of Prana, the life force.
Since everything has a vibrational frequency, including ourselves, it makes sense that sound frequencies affect how we feel. Sound can revibrate frequencies from low energy like guilt or fear to higher vibrations of love and joy. This is why specific songs and types of music often evoke specific types of emotions in us. This is also the essence of sound healing, an ancient healing technique that uses tonal frequencies to bring the body into a state of vibrational balance and harmony. Sound therapy synchronizes brain waves to achieve deep states of relaxation and helps restore the normal vibrational frequencies of cells in our body.
The benefits of sound healing
1. It's super-relaxing
Deep relaxation is one of the most significant and universal benefits of sound therapy. Sounds permeate our system and bring it back into harmony.
2. Helps remove energy blockages
Sound vibrations open, clear and balance the chakras and release stuck energy. Something like an "energetic deep tissue massage" that leaves you feeling balanced and fulfilled.
When healing occurs, you may also feel physical sensations, such as tingling in your hands or feeling hot or cold. Breathe into the feelings without attaching to or labeling them. Instead, focus on your breath as you let them pass.
3. It boosts your health
Benefits may include better sleep, reduced chronic pain and blood pressure, lower cholesterol, and reduced risk of heart disease. (See a doctor for professional help with these ailments.)
4. Promotes mental, emotional and spiritual well-being
It also heals on a mental and emotional level. Sound healing helps reduce stress, anxiety and depression. It balances and clears the mind and leads to a renewed sense of purpose, well-being, peace and happiness.
I personally work with crystal bowls and tuning forks with the intention of cleaning and harmonizing the chakras (energy centers) in our body.
Crystal singing bowls
Clear quartz singing bowls contain the seven colors of the rainbow to stimulate the seven energy centers or chakras of your body. This helps heal listeners by transmitting pure light into the human aura. This process expands your consciousness and brings about a positive shift in your consciousness, helping you align with your true, original self. Quartz crystals are also believed to have the ability to balance your electromagnetic field during meditation.
The tuner is an acoustic resonator in the form of a two-pronged fork made of calibrated metal. Tuners have been around since the 1700s, created by John Shore, a British musician and sergeant trumpeter and court lutenist.
Tuning forks can be held against specific parts of the body and emit vibrations that release tension and open blocked energy channels. This form of sound healing is good for emotional balance and pain relief.
Using forks affects our biological rhythms. It allows each of us to synchronize with the cycles of nature, allowing us to find balance and homeostasis. Homeostasis is the basis for healing the physical body, mind and spirit.
Tuners rich in resonance and vibration connect and support the body's natural frequencies. The sound waves of the forks vibrate and travel deep into the body along energy pathways that affect human physiology and access our sense of balance, space, memory and healing.
Many have researched music therapy and its benefits to the human body, including Dr. John Beaulieu, who spent hours in a soundproof room listening to the sounds of his body at rest and under stress. He discovered that the nervous system actually has a tone, or hum, and when stressed, the tone changes. He was instantly able to tune his body and thus his nervous system with tuning forks.
